Design Center 101: Kitchen- Backsplash

One of the hardest selections in the design center is tile. There are just so many different choices to choose from. The backsplash can really be a main focal point in the kitchen. There are so many different ways to make it stand out or blend in.

A few questions you need to ask yourself before deciding on a backspalsh are:

1) Do you want there to be one focal point or do you want the entire backsplash to be uniform?

2) Do you want a lot of color or do you want to stay neurtal?

3) Do you want big tile or do you want to do smaller pieces of tile?

Below you will find several different backsplashes we have done.

This is a very basic backsplash. The tiles are 6x6 tumbled marble laid on a diagnoal.

Here they have used 3x6 tumbled marble tiles and laid then on a bricklay pattern. Behind the cook top they have used the same tiles and laid then in a herringbone pattern framed with a tumbed marble frame tile. This is still a very uniform backsplash but the framed pieces gives it a litte more detail.

Here we have tumbled marble on a bricklay pattern with a beautiful diamond detail piece behind the cook top. The diamond piece is framed with a metal tile frame and filled with a stone tile accent pieces. Also note that this homeowner brought the tile up to the ceiling behind the stailness steal vent.

Here we have the tumbled marble 4x4 tiles laid on a diagonal with a beautiful rectangle of accent tiles behind the cook top. This accent piece really stands out agains the lighter tiles around it.

This accent behind the cooktop features beautiful small accent tiles around a diamond of 4 4x4 tumbed marble tile pieces. The 3x6 tumbled marble tiles are used in the rest of the backsplash.

A band running the lenght of the backsplash may be more what you are looking for. Here they have done a tile detail piece behind the cook top and then used the accent pieces as a band aound the kitchen. This really helps tie in the accent pieces.

Here is an example of a band using ling skinny tiles.

In addition to tumbled marble we have a lot of glass tile choices as well. Here is our glass tile in 3x6 bricklay in white. Its a very clean modern look.

Here is glass tile shown in a color with white grout.

Why not do accent tiles along the entire backsplash. This homeowner did and it looks so good. They ran the tiles in a vertical pattern.

This homeowner used floor tiles as a backsplash and accent tiles behind the cook top to the ceiling. This makes the stainless steal vent really stand out against the rest of the kitchen.

Here are 12x12 floor tiles laid on a diagonal with tile accents every tile. They also opted to do large tile accents behind their cooktop.
